Anything that has a plethora of potentially life threatening chemicals in them can’t be good for you. Considering that people that only nicotine is the bad guy in cigarettes need to take a look at the list we’ve compiled for you.
There are nearly a hundred chemicals and at least forty whose effects are known to be harmful to the human body. Such chemicals should be avoided at all costs.
- Ammonia (toilet cleaner): Used as a flavoring, frees nicotine from tobacco turning it into a gas, found in dry cleaning fluids.
- Acetone (nail polish remover): Fragrant volatile liquid ketone, used as a solvent, for example, nail polish remover - found in cigarette smoke.
- Tar: Particulate matter drawn into lungs when you inhale on a lighted cigarette. Once inhaled, smoke condenses and about 70 per cent of the tar in the smoke is deposited in the smoker's lungs.
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) (car exhaust fumes):An odorless, tasteless and poisonous gas, rapidly fatal in large amounts - it's the same gas that comes out of car exhausts and is the main gas in cigarette smoke, formed when the cigarette is lit.
- Hydrogen Cyanide (gas chamber poison)
- Benzene (petrol additive): A colorless cyclic hydrocarbon obtained from coal and petroleum, used as a solvent in fuel and in chemical manufacture - and contained in cigarette smoke. It is a known carcinogen and is associated with leukemia.
- Formaldehyde (embalming fluid): A colorless liquid, highly poisonous, used to preserve dead bodies - also found in cigarette smoke. It is known to cause cancer, respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal problems.
- Cyanide: It is a chemical compound that contains a cyano group.
- Benzene: also known as Benzol is an organic chemical compound that is a flammable and colorless liquid.
- Formaldehyde: is a compound in the form of gas that has a very pungent smell.
- Methanol (wood alcohol): is the simplest alcohol that is also known as methyl alcohol.
- Acetylene (the fuel used in welding torches): is an unsaturated chemical compound that is also the simplest alkyne hydrocarbon.
- toxic trace metals (nickel*, lead, cadmium*, chromium*, arsenic* and selenium)
- tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs): N-nitrosonornicotine*, nicotine-derived nitrosamino ketone (NNK)*, N-nitrosoanatabine* and N-nitrosoanabasine*.
- aromatic amines: 1-aminonapthalene, 2-aminonapthalene, 3-aminobiphenyl and 4-aminobiphenyl*
- volatile carbonyls (formaldehyde*, acetaldehyde*, acetone, acrolein, propionaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone and butyraidehyde)
- 10 selected basic semi-volatiles: pyridine and quinoline
- 11 phenolic compounds: hydroquinone, resorcinol, catechol, phenol, m+p-cresol, and o-cresol
- 13 selected volatiles: 1,3-butadiene*, isoprene, acrylonitrile*, benzene*, toluene and styrene.
*carcinogenic (cancer causing)
